An age of scientific fruition is bursting into bloom in Asia. Across a spectrum of fields, Asia is producing research results on par with Europe and North America. These achievements notwithstanding, Asia tends to stress the application and utility of research results, without sufficiently deriving from them essential and universal knowledge. This, despite the fact that these are precisely the knowledge attributes that will support and advance scientific research in the future. They form the trunk of a tree from which branches of both basic and applied research will grow and flourish.
HOPE Meetings are attended and led by Nobel laureates and other top world-level researchers who labor on the frontlines of knowledge exploration and creation. By interacting with these eminent scientists, the young HOPE Meeting participants are able to partake of not only their expertise but also their spirit, while coming into personal contact with their ways of thinking and living, in a rare experience that promises to be as inspiring as it is stimulating.
Science is advanced by building upon the accomplishments of successive generations of researchers, competing in friendly rivalry with peers, and interacting with colleagues in diverse fields of specialization. In physics, there are two main flows of research: theory and experiment. Physics is advanced by a confluence and interaction between these two flows. This kind of interaction yields advancement in other fields of research as well.
What’s important in advancing science is interaction among researchers with shared issue-perceptions and interests—interaction that crosses boundaries of nation, region and research field and is carried out upon a platform of amicable competition. Young researchers from around the Asian region will attend the upcoming HOPE Meeting. They will form acquaintances and friendships with peers aspiring to purse the same path of scientific pursuit. While continuing in the future to interact with each other in friendly competition, they will go on to advance science in not only Asia but throughout the world in a way that enriches the whole of human society.
